Here the art book for Catherine refers to Erica, a trans woman, as Eric. It also seems to list her sex as male.
Additionally, in Catherine, Erica is insulted by her alleged friends, who accuse her of not being a real woman. She is given nightmares exclusively given to men. The nightmares themselves are punishment for not revealing that she was trans to one guy she slept with.
Beyond that, a character in the game also says that sex with Erica was “weird”.
All in all, the game is thoroughly transphobic and deserves no praise for its representation of trans women.
Okay. I try to keep shit that will just start arguments off of this blog, but I can’t believe what I read here. First off, Erica gets these nightmares (Toby does too, by the way) because she is in a relationship that can not pro-create. The whole basis of the antagonist (I’m going to say the nightmares) is to split up relationships that are not moving “fast enough” and (because I can’t remember the exact quote) are not baby making.
Second of all, you don’t know Erica is trans unless you get the true Katherine ending. She has also been friends with these guys since school. They know what she was, it was their groups relationship. They gave each other shit regardless of gender. AND even though Orlando knew Erica was trans, he loved her (and it’s seen when Toby starts going off about how he lost his virginity to her).
The fact that she was male has nothing to do with anything, aside from the fact it explains her nightmares. The reason that this character sheet shows she was male was to explain certain subtleties in the game without forcing players to spend more hours getting the one ending that explained it.
And if you’re going to start off on that ending, and the fact Toby said he “wanted his v-card” back, again it’s just the group dynamics.
I’m sick of this shit in the gaming industry where people do not play the games and in turn don’t understand the context, then criticize the game for what it is. They just see a screen shot and blow it out of proportion. I am not transphobic, or homophobic or any type of phobic when it comes to what a person wants to do with their body or how they feel about anyone at any given time. The people that put this crap together are just reading into things way too much. Atlus is probably one of my favorite publishers because they put relationships like this into games. They aren’t meant to be demeaning or transphobic, they’re supposed to mimic real life relationships (especially in Catherine). If Atlus just beat around the bush with it and had been super PC about it, it wouldn’t be real. Transgender people don’t want to be treated differently because of what they are, they want to be accepted for who they are. And that’s exactly how Altus played it off with Erica.
